'PREGUNTØ, MEXICØ'
A Connection Between People and Place
Summer 2024, I travelled to Baja California Sur with Putney Student Travel to participate in their Marine Biology and Underwater Photography workshop. During this incredible adventure, I sought to delve deeper into photojournalism and portraiture photography. Driven by my passion for meeting new people and hearing their life experience and stories, I aimed to share with the world the faces and words of those I’ll never forget. Instead of focusing on celebrities or well-known figures, I prefer to highlight individuals who rarely have the opportunity to be in front of a professional photographer, and to share the laughs we shared together. My goal was to capture the essence of the remarkable individuals I encountered during my travels, learn about their culture, life experience, and desires for the youth, and share with those that may just be if it from hearing it, almost halfway across the globe. But I didn’t know quite how to do that. During the beginning, I was unmotivated, and mainly still left confused as to how to create a new mini-series as compelling as last year’s “Jøy, Tokyø”. However, I thought back to my own personal struggles this year, with defining my home and identity, and found myself finally inspired to create my new series titled, “Preguntø.” In this project, I posed a single, open-ended question to the locals around me: “Why is Baja California Sur your home, and what makes it feel like home to you?”. I encouraged them to interpret the question in any way they wished, allowing them the freedom to respond as briefly or as extensively as they felt compelled to. Through my short conversations, I learned the profound connection between people and place, as told by those who know it best.
